Expectations
and Attraction
"It's something that
seems to happen to me twice a year. And it always
seems to happen in a good round."
-- Justin Leonard, on incurring a penalty stroke
when his ball moved as he grounded his putter.
Justin
Leonard would have tied for the lead in the
opening round of last year's Kemper Insurance
Open... if his ball hadn't rolled back slightly
as he set up for a 2-foot birdie putt. He called
a penalty on himself and settled for par. Then he
flung his putter toward his bag - no doubt angry
at himself and the gods of golf for dealing him
such a fate. But was it fate or a sort of
self-fulfilling prophecy?
I
believe we all have the ability to attract what
we want into our lives. A lot has been written in
the past few years about how our thoughts and
feelings actually create our reality. This is not
just West Coast woo-woo theory. Even someone as
mainstream as Stephen Covey tells us that
everything is created twice: first in our
thoughts and then in the material world. Maybe
you don't believe this, but I'll bet it's
happened to you. You're thinking of someone
you haven't seen in a long while. The phone rings
and it's that's person. Coincidence or
attraction? Can we really create our own
reality?
On
the golf course if you think you're not going to
play well, you probably won't. Your
thoughts increase your tension level, your
muscles tighten, you lose focus and wha la --
you're not playing well. If you think your
ball is going to move as you get ready to putt,
maybe your muscles tightened and you ground the
putter a little too hard and the ball rolls back.
And
if you know this usually happens during a good
round, when you're playing well your mind will
start telling you that you're going to blow it
soon. Think these thoughts long enough and
they become part of your self- image. You start
to think of yourself as someone who blows it when
things are going well.
Same
holds true in business. Our thoughts and feelings
affect our body chemistry that in conscious and
subconscious ways affects our performance. Our
thoughts and feelings also affect our energy
level and that can have a huge influence on who
and what we attract into our lives.
Make
a conscious effort to become more aware of your
thoughts and feelings on and off the course.
Upgrade to more positive thoughts and to feelings
that create higher energy instead of wearing you
down. Once this becomes a habit, you'll be amazed
to find that you've moved to the next performance
level. Because you'll expect only great things
and that's exactly what you'll be attracting into
your life!
