"IMPROVE YOUR GAME & YOUR BUSINESS!"

THIS MONTH TIPS

The Biggest Challenge in Golf & Business
Golf is the great equalizer. It tests us all in the same way. Whether playing competitively, for business, or just for the fun of it, every golfer faces the same challenge. Pros and beginners alike face it. It’s the challenge that makes golf the game of a lifetime. It’s the challenge that gets you hooked and creates your love-hate relationship with the game. It’s the challenge of playing well on a consistent basis.

PREVIOUS MONTH TIPS:

The Ten Commandments of Business Golf
What can the average Business Golfer do to end up in this type of heaven where the business seems to happen effortlessly through golf?? It helps to follow the Ten Commandments of Business Golf.

Making a Commitment to Business Golf
It’s easy to make emotional decisions about golf. The game has that way of hooking you (no pun intended!). It seems to happen to everyone during each round: the one perfect shot that makes you want to sign up for Q School and join the pro tour -- the shot that keeps you coming back. And then there are a lot of other shots -- that make you want to swear off the game forever (or just swear!!).

Expectations and Attraction
Justin Leonard would have tied for the lead in the opening round of last year's Kemper Insurance Open... if his ball hadn't rolled back slightly as he set up for a 2-foot birdie putt. He called a penalty on himself and settled for par. Then he flung his putter toward his bag - no doubt angry at himself and the gods of golf for dealing him such a fate.  But was it fate or a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy?

The Mental Game of Golf and Business
Playing golf for business purposes can be a very challenging experience. You’re playing a very complex game that is one of the most difficult sports to master. At the same time, you’re combining it with a social interaction that has a business objective. Focus on the wrong thing and you can lose business or miss an opportunity. And the stakes are even higher!

Reading People on the Golf Course
The one question I'm asked more than any other is when is it appropriate to talk business on the golf course. Unfortunately, there's no easy answer. You can lose by talking business too soon. But opportunities are also lost by not reading the clues and failing to talk business when the client is receptive to it. So you'll want to know how to read people on the golf course before you head out to play with a prospect, client, or the boss.

Playing a More Consistent Game
As I work with business golfers, recreational golfers, and even pros, the concern is often the same -- "how can I play well consistently?" Whenever I get this question, I ask the person if they use a good mental routine on a consistent basis. The answer is usually "yes", but it often turns out that their pre-shot routine focuses on the mechanics of their swing rather than on their mental game.

Costly Business Golf Mistakes
The billions of dollars and thousands of hours spent by corporate America on business golf can be an excellent investment because golf is such a powerful tool for building relationships and developing business. But when companies don't look carefully at how they're using business golf, the cost is even higher. Not only are they wasting money, they're also probably losing business and missing opportunities. The cost becomes more than any company can afford. Are you or your company making any of these expensive business golf mistakes?

Think Your Way to a Better Golf Game
Whether you play golf competitively, for business reasons, or just for fun, you probably want to play better. If you’re like most golfers who are trying to improve, you’ll work on the mechanics of your swing. Or you’ll look for new equipment that will give you a few extra yards or a truer putt. Although you may see some improvement if you use this approach, you’re neglecting the most important part of your game!
