JULY, 2001:
Plan to Sink Each Putt
When
Greg Maddox used a performance psychologist to
help him win more games for the Atlanta Braves
they focused on his attitude. He was splitting
his time and energy between wanting to win and
fearing he would lose. In essence, he made losing
more possible even before he took the mound in
the first inning.
Planning
is important. When planning is combined with
expectation you have a very powerful combination.
When you think of putting from eight feet out, do
you expect to drop the putt, or do you just hope
you will make it, or at least get close. There is
a world of difference between the two.
Expecting
to make a putt has a lot to do with your
experiences. But the expectation is also based on
the future and what you are practicing in your
mind. To do this right, simply remember to use
the past, the present and the future. Use the
past by remembering a good putt and remember how
it felt to stroke the ball just right. Then,
after you have lined up the putt, think about the
feel of the stroke, and mentally watch the ball
roll to the cup, see and hear it fall into the
hole. Now expect to do it all over again in real
time (now).
Notice
that you never see the ball missing the hole. You
do not think of getting it only close. You see,
feel and hear the ball going in. This builds you
expectation, and expectation directs your efforts
at the physical level of body movement down to
fine muscles that you are not even aware of at a
conscious level. In other words, your expectation
will cause you to make fine adjustments to your
stroke that can, and often do, make the
difference between sinking the putt or coming
close. Another way of saying it is that if you
ask for close, then you will get close, but you
will probably not sink the putt.
Understanding
how the mind works is vital to making your best
game happen more often. Practice what you learn
first in your mind, then in practice, and finally
on the course in competition. Remember, you get
what you ask for.
