HANDICAPPING COMES TO APAG

This probably comes as good news to some, and bad news to others. APAG is in the process of implementing the United States Golf Association handicap system for use by its members. At present, the full APAG membership has been uploaded into the system along with the scores from APAG tournaments, as far back as July 2000.

We have verified with the USGA’s Director of Handicapping that we can issue official USGA handicaps as long as we comply by the rules of the USGA. Though APAG is not a member of a national golf federation, our handicaps are as legitimate as if they were issued by another club in Asia or the USA.

As we begin providing this opportunity to APAG members, this would be a good time to put into simple words what a handicap is. Very simply stated, a USGA Handicap is designed to promote fairness during competitions, and to measure the golfer’s potential ability. The reason I highlighted ‘potential’ is that many golfers have a misconception that a USGA handicap is calculated to equate to your average number of strokes above par. In reality, through the USGA’s mathematical calculation, a golfer’s handicap is set to be closer to 3 over par. Since the handicap formula uses the top 10 out of your last 20 scores, it is predicted that you will shoot a net score equal to, or less than, par only 25% of the time. The rest of your net scores will be above par, with the average 3 above par.

A few of the important issues regarding the handicap are, 1) that we compute them using a system that follows the USGA Handicap formulas, 2) that APAG golfers have a regular opportunity to play against each other, 3) that we provide the opportunity for peer review, and 4) that APAG has a Handicap Committee comprised mostly of APAG members. As this system is introduced to APAG members, we (APAG staff and its soon-to-be-appointed Handicap Committee) will be vigilant to ensure that all USGA regulations are followed so that we can maintain our standing in the golfing community.

One of the key ingredients to the success and acceptance of the handicap system is the creation of the APAG Handicap Committee, described in this newsletter. We’re calling for volunteers to serve a one year term on the Handicap Committee, and ask those interested to contact our office in writing, either by email (admin@asiapacificamateurgolfers.com) or fax (03 7875 2373).
