Cock A Doodle Do

I would like to share an email correspondence about a question I recently received. You will find the correspondence helpful in eliminating negative thoughts.

"Hi Michael, I've enjoyed your book and your "tips"...and agree with focus on the moment, not the outcome. However, in the last few tournaments I've played in (handicap 2.1) my brain seems to focus on negative outcome...what can happen bad, rather the a good clear picture of the shot in my minds eye. Any thoughts?? "

Your question is the same one I was asked a couple of weeks ago by a good friend of mine who is playing on the buy.com tour. Only he referred to his negative thoughts as pink elephants or negative thoughts that pop up out of the blue for no reason at all.

I told him that when negative thoughts (emotions) occur it is important not to give them the time of the day or allow them to hang around in your mind. I told him that when a pink elephant comes up, just say, "Cock A Doodle Do" like a rooster and tell your mind that the negative thoughts are not welcome. He tried it and said, "It works". The following week he shot 72, 67, 69 and 69.

This may seem silly at first, but it works. Your mind can only dwell on one thought at a time. So why be negative, when you can be positive. Your negative thoughts can only exist if you allow them. So the next time they pop up, just say, "Cock A Doodle Do" and go about your business. Try it, it works. Keep me posted as to your progress.

"Mike, IT seems to work!!!! Today when the "pink Elephants" arrived I didn't say "Cock A Doodle Do"...but; I did say to myself..." That is stupid, I'm only allowed one thought sooooooo it must be positive" and low & behold the "Pink Elephants" disappeared!! Best round of the year! (67) in competition! Thanks!!!!"

If negative thoughts interfere with your game, you can allow them to hang around or say, "Cock A Doodle Do" and chase them away. Try it. It works!

"My game had improved since reading your book and applying your Mental Tips. Last year was my first year of golf. When I applied your techniques, I immediately took 10 strokes off my game. I am also able to get my game back on track after a "bad" hole. Thank you for taking the time to write this book. Not only has it helped in my golf game, but in other aspects of my life as well! Thanks again."
